DECONSTRUCTED HAIR STYLES
"Hair is fun again," says creative director Amy Abramite. "We're cutting
lots of light, deconstructed layers, major texture and bold bangs." The
key words are disconnected, layered and asymmetric.
Deconstruction means long and heavy on one side, light and loose on the
other. In disconnection, an unblended section of hair clashes with the
rest of the style.Asymmetry is a shape that flows from short to long with imbalance. Any
of these, even done subtly, can instantly update a hairstyle.
Shorter lengths look great with a graduated build-up of weight. Longer
layers of hair rest on top of the shorter layers. The shape is round and
full. Abramite likes to complement it with a strong, heavy fringe. Bangs
are blunt, cut just above the eyes or brow.
COLOR SMUDGING
"Deconstruction and disconnection need strong, bold colors," says
colorist Robert Bennett. "Black, reds and gold look great together, put
into place so that, when the hair moves, it all looks like one beautiful
smudge of color."
Bennett's color placement is done in uneven rectangular and triangular
sections. For example, the under-layer in back or nape area could be a
strong, deep red or burgundy rectangle; on the sides, black triangles.
He weaves chunky blonde and gold tones into the top layers.
Blow-dry hair in one direction and strong color layers are revealed.
Blow it dry in another direction and the color looks soft and smudgy.
"You don't need to work in a record store to have cut and color this
strong," explains Bennett. "Done the right way, it looks extremely chic
and stylish."
